History

On February 23, 1905, Paul P. Harris, a Chicago lawyer, called three friends to a meeting. What he had in mind was a club that would kindle fellowship among members of the business community -- the spirit to reach out in service to others less fortunate. As they continued to meet, adding others to the group, they began rotating their meetings among the members' places of business, hence the name. By the end of 1905, the club had 30 members. (more)

The Rotary Club of San José North was chartered on February 1, 1980. Our Charter President was Ken McLaughlin -- Jim Harper, Steve McCray and George Uccelli are also charter members - each is now Senior Active with multiple Paul Harris fellowships. Dwyer, Harper and Uccelli are also Past Presidents of the club.

In the early years, San José North quickly established several service relationships, including providing and serving Tending the Flock meals at a local community kitchen, building a library and playground at The Martinson Child Development Center, supporting teens at Camp RYLA (a Rotary Youth Leadership Camp), and conducting Blood Drives at the American Red Cross. These relationships continue to thrive today.

Today we also have relationships with several other organizations in the community, including:

  • Sorting food at the Second Harvest Food Bank
  • Donating food to Loaves and Fishes Family Kitchen.
  • Mentoring youngsters at the Grant School.
  • Working at the San José Family Shelter.
  • Helping the elderly with Project Match.

... and the list keeps growing all the time!

San José North assisted in the organization of two additional Rotary Clubs in the area, San José International Airport Sunrise, and Alviso. Our Club also sponsors an Interact Club at Notre Dame High School in San José, and a new Interact Club at Andrew Hill High School, also in San José!

The Rotary Club of San José North currently has 42 members.
